Our mission is to enhance our children's health and to develop, at their early ages, their capacity to act as real citizens within the society and their community, and to give them the opportunity to be directly involved in the protection and the improvement of our planet.
To be aware of the idea that a small local area and its way of life have an impact to our global world. I strongly believe our children need to be multilingual learners. Children must be able to understand and enrich their vision of the world and the various people living in the same planet. As citizens of the world, children will have in their hands the power to build a global and sustainable community. Celine Chouteau Founder & Director Initials here: Environmental Policy Phoenix Global Green School is committed to reducing its environmental impact.

Initials here: Welcome to Phoenix Global Green School! INTRODUCTION We are pleased that you have chosen Phoenix Global Green School to care for your children. Phoenix Global Green School stands for a unique philosophy & program with an exquisite green education and environment. Our highest goal is to nurture healthy minds and bodies, “un esprit sain dans un corps sain”, so that our children will be able to live a positive, productive and happy life. Licensing Phoenix Global Green School is a school licensed under the California Department of Social Services. Phoenix Global Green School accepts children from 2 years through 6 years (see Enrollment, Admission and Registration for details).
Philosophy The purpose of Phoenix Global Green School is to provide Excellence in all areas including a high-quality early childhood experience for your child in a unique, familial, safe, supporting and stimulating environment and to focus on an environmental education & literacy. Your children will be offered open ended materials to develop and progress in a fun, developmentally appropriate curriculum. Our wonderful program is focusing in facilitating learning in all developmental areas: cognitive, language, physical and social/emotional. We also believe that every child is different, and each develops at his or her own particular pace and, in order to respond to their uniqueness, we are offering a teacher-student ratio 1:5.
Why a “Green” School & Philosophy? At Phoenix Global Green School, we strongly believe that the health of the Earth and the health of people are tightly interconnected. We make our point of providing a healthy environment for both students and staff because their health is our priority and our core Initials here: principle. Our final objective, as our Phoenix's symbol with its ability to regenerate itself, is to make our school being able to produce as much as it can all its needs itself and becoming a positive energy establishment: by including an environmental education & literacy in the center of the children’s education with ecology & gardening classes, composting, recycling, reusing, learning about the protection of your wildlife, while experiencing the love of working together, and by providing USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC vegan food which can be purchased at Whole Foods, Lassens, Sprouts or Trader's Joe & from local farmers & producers - Tutti Frutti, South Pasadena Farmers Market.
At Phoenix Global Green School, we strongly believe, as noted by the biologist O. Wilson, that the “natural world is filled with the most information within a rich environment that people will ever encounter”. For this reason, we know that when a school program is promoting hands-on activities, child-initiated inquiry about the natural world, it is more likely to be promoting children’s self-confidence, inspiring their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and increasing their imagination and creativity. Our program is prioritizing activities through Play and encouraging the children’s interests and Initiated activities to develop learning by offering a balance between “child-initiated” and teacher-directed activities.
At this age, children learn by doing things that are meaningful to them. Our teachers use and create an environment that supports learning through play in a variety of interest centers,, blocks, dramatic play, science/discovery, art, library/quiet area, etc. Through Play, children test their developing ideas with objects, people, and situations -the key ability for academic learning; they develop many kinds of skills together - physical, social, emotional, thinking, and language; they are really doing things they are interested in, so they have a natural motivation to learn; and they develop concepts and skills together, while they also learn from other children and develop social skills by playing together.
This curriculum also helps teachers develop appropriate small and large group activities (outdoor learning, music, circle/sharing time, cooking, etc.) to enhance child growth in the classroom. To support children’s motivation and curiosity, to develop our environmental literacy program, (see. NAAEE, North American Association for Environmental Initials here: Education) and follow the EEI Curriculum (Education and the Environment Initiative), Phoenix Global Green School is also specializing its literature in children’s main interest, the natural world, by providing books about ecology, different animal classes, flowers, gardening, information about our children’s favorite animals and environment… Accomplishing our philosophy, Phoenix Global Green School will be inspiring children with an ecological responsibility and citizenship behavior, environmental health and nutrition program as well as teaching our children how to communicate different languages to be open to communities coming from all over the world.
At Phoenix Global Green School, we also value the partnership with families and the community as we know children learn both at home and at school. We want the parents to feel part of the process of this unique program by supporting us and their children, by helping us to spread out our green & universal philosophy’s program through the entire community. By entrusting us with their children, parents will have the beautiful feeling to participate to our wonderful green project while they will be directly helping their community by enrolling their children. Why an Immersion Approach?
As a Multilingual school, our philosophy is to value all languages and not causing a loss for the native language because it is crucial to keep developing English/First language vocabulary and grammar. We believe that foreign languages need to be introduced by immersion and progressively so that the children do not feel lost or not part of the class. Why? You learned your first native language by an immersion approach. Your parents and family members simply spoke to you every day. There was no need for translation because there was simply no language to translate.
Children learn a language intuitively simply by being immersed in it. You might have learned that it is especially important to be speaking only one language with your child, but the last scientific studies are just proving that it is only a myth! Dual language learners are children who are 3, 4, 5 and 6 years old and are still in the process of acquiring their first language, even as they are also acquiring their second. At yearly ages, children tend to lag in vocabulary development, often mixing sounds or words. But by 4 or 5 years of age, most children have separated the
Initials here: languages successfully. Bilingual children that know the equivalent of vocabulary in both languages as children, who are monolingual, will be more likely mastering language and literacy. Learning several languages is increasing cognitive, social, and linguistic skills as well as maintaining more attention in the learning process. But to learn a second language requires time and it is important that the children keep learning it for years to be able to be fluent and bilingual. The other point is that language acquisition is a natural process, but it also depends on the individual child.
The child’s culture, unique temperament, and learning style play a part as well. You must be aware that since 1974, the Supreme Court determined that a lack of instruction in one’s first language is a violation of children’s civil rights. That is the reason why your child will be taught mostly in French but also in English sometimes to make sure s/he feels comfortable first and then ready to learn. Keep in mind that the more developed will be his/her vocabulary in English, the more your child will be able to develop & enrich her/his multilingual language.
To do so, we are offering a French immersion program with extra Mandarin and Spanish classes, both for three to four hours a week for ALL the children. Being aware that the other biggest problem in other multilingual schools is the absence of books, Phoenix Global Green School is providing a profusion of English, French, Chi nese and Spanish books and, we are also using many flashcards, songs, CD, to make sure the children are in complete full immersion. Progressively, we are developing our multimedia library with more French, Spanish and Mandarin learning materials. Book donations are always appreciated.
Curriculum & Assessment At Phoenix Global Green School, our curriculum is providing a complete set of activities with a balance between Child directed & initiated and Teacher directed & challenging activities, indoors and outdoors activities, and a very well-balanced healthy program, promoting good health habits, with Organic & Vegan food as well as time for relaxing, resting, toileting and developing basic hygiene awareness. Initials here: Progress is observed and documented in the following developmental and academic content areas: Cognitive, Language, Social/Emotional, Physical, Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies, Arts, Music and Dance. The children are assessed three times each year (fall, winter and spring) utilizing on- going observations, samples of classroom work and family input.
Parent-teacher conferences are typically conducted twice during the school year to encourage parental involvement and discuss each child’s current performance and progress. Multi-Age Classrooms Setting: Our group of classes are composed of mixed-age children which means they are not separated by age. Only for specific classes, our teachers will determine their groups by level of acquisition of language to help your child to go further in French, Spanish and Chinese language. We believe that children benefit from being in a mixed-age classroom for several reasons. Mixed- age groups resemble families. Just like families, children support and take care of one another.
Mixed age groups of two, three, four, and five years old spend their time caring, sharing, helping, working, and playing cooperatively. In addition, multi-age classrooms have the purpose of grouping children that are in similar stages of development rather than grouping them by age to stimulate learning. This way the class encompasses a wide range of developmental stages, which lets each child find his/her own way along the continuum. The curriculum is designed to support the wide range of developmental abilities. Each child has the opportunity to go at his/her own pace. Children end up where they are supposed to be, prepared for kindergarten, with less pressure to develop skills at the same rate.
Our environment plays an important part in the curriculum. It is set up to engage children in planning and working by making materials available to children in learning centers. Children are active learners. They choose and work with the materials according to their own interests and abilities. Another important part of the multi-age classroom is the accessibility of the teachers. The teachers are always actively involved with the children throughout the day not only in the teacher-initiated activities (several classes are prepared in order to offer different levels of difficulty), but also in those activities the children initiate and carry out themselves.
The teachers help with problem solving and asking questions to extend thinking during center time. We see each child as an individual. Each child is compared to himself/herself and his/her individual progress along a developmental continuum. Continuity from year to year saves valuable time. Children who know the routine Initials here: and expectations share their knowledge with new friends. There are also many social/emotional benefits to multi-age classrooms. Children do not learn the same things at the same time in the same way. All children progress through the same developmental stages, but not at the same rate.
Some older children may take the lead in playing with other older children, which builds self-confidence. This is also a wonderful opportunity for older children who are shy to develop leadership skills as they relate to their younger friends. Therefore, a child who would not normally emerge as a leader or teacher in a group of same age peers has an opportunity to do so in a mixed-age group. This also works for the younger child who has older siblings/cousins and can easily play with older friends. S/he has the opportunity to participate in play and learning that is more complex.
Another benefit of the multi-age classroom is that it encourages positive interactions. Older children are seldom aggressive toward younger children because older children have a natural confidence in their own abilities. When a younger child is aggressive toward an older child, the older child is more capable of handling the situation in a positive manner. Conflicts are resolved with words because the older child has been taught how to resolve conflicts and reach a solution. The older students model this process for the younger ones. In mixed age classrooms, children look at each other, not just the teachers for assistance.
It is not unusual for one child to help another to explain rules, reach for a toy, or do a puzzle. Assessing what is needed in a situation and responding in a helpful manner takes thinking, skill, and confidence. Interaction and cooperation are important and encouraged. There tends to be more cooperation and less competition in a multi-age learning environment. Children learn to mentor and seek mentors. They learn the important life skill of communicating. Showing empathy, giving help, learning to ask for help, and accepting limitations are nurtured. Mixed-age groups give each child a place to be equal, a leader, and a teacher.
According to the Association for Childhood Education International, “research indicates that academic achievement in multi-age classrooms is the same as, or better than, in same-grade classrooms. Multi-age classrooms do not negatively affect student achievement. Students in multi-age classrooms do have significantly more positive attitudes toward school themselves, and ” Initials here: ADMISSION POLICIES Children entering Phoenix Global Green School must be at least 2 years old, in good health and FULLY potty trained. A health evaluation by a physician is required upon enrollment and the child’s immunizations must be current. Application and Enrollment Procedure Application begins in the spring and are admitted on a first come, first serve basis.
However, new applications are accepted on an on-going basis for children throughout the school year. State and District policies require that we have your child’s file complete with all the forms and information needed BEFORE they may attend preschool. In January, all current families will be asked to confirm or not confirm their enrollment for the next school year. Current enrollees and their siblings are given first priority choosing their programs. Phoenix Global Green School serves and welcomes families regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, color, or special need that can be reasonably accommodated.
We seek a diverse student population. Admission decisions are sometimes influenced by a need to assure a balanced group of children, or to offer a spot to the next person if your child is not fully potty trained yet or else the program and time for enrolling available simply do not fit your current needs. For example, there are a limited number of spaces for two and ½ year old’s due to class size (age, gender,). Please understand that we receive many applicants. Applicants will be notified in early spring regarding their child’s admission status.
Children who are not accepted will be put on a waiting list until offered a space or no longer eligible due to age. Before a child is enrolled, we offer a parent tour during Open houses and/or individual visit. Visiting the program allows both parent and child to become comfortable with our environment, staff, and schedule. It will also give us the opportunity to present parents with a description of the program, set forth program policies, and establish a connection with the parents and child before attendance begins. The following is a list of the steps prior to your child’s enrollment.
1) Both parents must attend a parent tour 2) Director will hand or email you an application form 3) Families fill out the application form and send it with the Application fee payment back to PGGS (your paperwork is filed in the order that it is received. PGGS reserves the right to consider other factors or criteria (gender, age, etc.) and to deviate from these guidelines as it deems appropriate under the circumstances. This payment plan is offered at 0% annual interest rate with the tuition to be paid in equal installments over 11 months. Fees, penalties, and interest could be incurred if the tuition is not paid on time or the each deposit does not go through. If any payment is not paid on time each month then interest and penalties may be incurred and PGGS has the right to remove the student(s) from the school. PGGS reserves the right to refuse this option to any parents, families, or students, in the sole discretion of PGGS. The parent(s) agree to personally guarantee the payment of the tuition including fees, penalties, and interest incurred.
Late/Non-Payment of Tuition Tuition may be paid annually, by quarter, or no less than 1 month at the time. Except as otherwise expressly stated in this Agreement, payment in full of the Monthly Tuition for each month and any Additional Fees incurred in the previous month are due on the first Initials here: calendar day of the month (“Due Date”) in which the Basic services are to be provided. Any payment that is returned due to NSF, will incur a $10 daily late fee starting on the day the funds were returned from our account until we receive the full payment and will be automatically added to your account, along with an NSF Fee of $25, no exceptions.
Unless PGGS makes an exception for you, in the sole discretion of PGGS, your child will not be permitted to return to the preschool until both payment and fees (Late and NSF fee) are paid in full. All payments must be made through the Parent Portal through ProCare Connect Tuition Express feature. Payments for all tuition and fees are only processed by ACH payments, no exceptions. Parents will need to enter their bank account information (routing and account number) when they log into ProCare Connect, and once this is completed, this payment feature is automatically set on autopay.
Refund Policy or Withdrawal from Preschool Tuition fees are for the direct operating costs of the preschool. Since we depend on tuition from each child, we cannot give credit for vacations or time that a child is absent from school for illness. When your child is enrolled, you are reserving the time, space, staffing, materials and provisions needed for your child’s preschool experience. Having these components available to your child is still necessary whether or not your child attends on any given day. Cancellation of the contract without at least one month notice will be following the same rule.
We cannot refund or credit tuition. There are no make-up days. Your obligation is to pay the fees for the full academic term on time. Each Child is enrolled for the entire school year – September to June - or the balance of the school year. All paid fees and tuitions are not refundable once paid. If the Parent following acceptance cancels this contract, there is a cancellation fee of the amount of your Security Deposit. The Security Deposit is due before the start of the school year, to be applied to your last tuition month at PGGS or the cancellation fee.
Should you care to terminate your child’s enrollment for any reason, 30 days advance, written notice will be required (see exception Initials here: for May and June). Your prepaid last month tuition will be applied at the beginning of the next month after 30 days written notice is given. Failure to provide 30 day written notice will result in forfeiture of deposit (example: if January is the last month your child will be attending PGGS, you will let us know in writing by December 1st that January is your child’s last month. We will apply the last month tuition deposit for January.
In other words, you do not pay separately for January tuition because that tuition is being paid by the Tuition Security Deposit). If you withdraw your child from Phoenix Global Green School during the summer months of May and June (even with 30 days written notice), you are still responsible for tuition for those month(s) remaining in the school year even though your child is not attending school as it is too late in the term to fill that spot. In other words, you are responsible for the FULL payment of May and June tuition.
If you decide to change your schedule at the last minute in September, you will need to wait for the next month to do so. If you are “holding a spot” for your child for the next school year, the deposit is non-refundable. You are essentially paying for September. Once you have signed the contract or had a written/verbal agreement and paid the deposit, it is non-refundable because we are saving that spot for your child. Once school has started, then you can give us 30 days written notice and we will apply your last month tuition deposit at the beginning of the next month.
(Example: if you sign the contract and put down September tuition deposit and Enrollment fees to hold a spot for your child starting in September and then over the summer you decide not to have your child attend PGGS, you are not eligible for any even if you have given 30 days’ notice). No change of schedule can be done during PGGS breaks (spring, summer, winter breaks). If you provided PGGS with written notice that your child will not be attending school after a certain date or that your student will be withdrawn from school by a certain date then PGGS does not have any obligation to keep the spot reserved for your student after your student has been removed from PGGS.
PGGS has the right to fill the spot with another student even if the Tuition Security Deposit is being used as a cancellation fee or as your child’s last month at PGGS. Initials here: Termination Phoenix Global Green School reserves the right to terminate your contract at will in the sole discretion of PGGS. Here are some of the reasons but it is not inclusive: - failure to pay tuition (continued late payments, tuition is not paid for one month) - an individual demanding excessive amounts of staff energy and time at the expense of other children or placing another child at risk from inappropriate or uncontrolled behavior.

The first days/weeks at school are a time of adjustment. We recognize that each child’s adjustment period will vary depending on his or her age, temperament and prior experience. Even children who usually say goodbye cheerfully can sometimes feel anxious. Please discuss your child’s needs with us before they start so that we may work together to ease this transition. We can also schedule a visit for both of you and your child before he or she begins attending the program. This will give your child an opportunity to get acquainted with us and gain trust for open communication.
A routine of helping your child put away her/his things in the cubby or doing a countdown before you kiss, and hug goodbye may give your child a feeling of confidence and helps begin her or his day. Ensure that you communicate that you feel that school is a good place to be and that you have confidence that your child will be safe and have fun. Also, we recommend that the goodbye must be short as the longer you might stay, the harder it might be on your child Initials here: anxiety to expect you to leave.
Greeting time and free-play time in the morning are especially important for your child as s/he needs EVERYDAY to feel personally welcomed and to get acquainted to her/his friends again BEFORE to start school activities. Finally, it is normal for a child to take a few weeks to fully adjust to a new routine. Please do not hesitate to ask for the recipes that have been used on certain days as she is regularly looking for some new recipes (for the special events as well) and introducing children to new ingredients, which are then communicated to our cook to follow the directions. Not always shown on the menu, the director is giving directions to our passionate cook for preparing homemade bread as well as a variety of smoothies, kale chips or different recipes during cooking class, classes which are usually following our thematic/seasonal program.
Food is part of our Educational Program: To be successful in our Food program, we count on the families to believe and encourage their child to continue the similar diet at home! Initials here: Discipline and Behavior Guidance Our preschool utilizes positive behavior supports and developmentally appropriate behavior guidelines. The word discipline means to teach. We use modeling to help teach children how to resolve conflict. Young children are in the beginning stages of learning how to express their feelings. We practice making requests, helpfulness, patience/taking turns, and negotiations. All behavior is a form of communication.
We try to understand what the behavior means to respectfully listen to what the children are trying to communicate. Consistency and love are used to teach communication. We stress respect for ourselves, others, and property. We support and encourage positive behavior through reinforcement such as verbal praise, smiles, and pleasant attention for appropriate behavior and positively stated alternatives when a conflict situation occurs. We individualize responses to the children’s behavior in relation to the particular child and situation. We try to identify the cause of the behavior and recognize that repeated inappropriate behavior may be the child’s way of signaling that s/he needs help in dealing with a certain task or situation.
We can then modify the learning environment and/or activities to help resolve the situation. We help children learn problem solving skills by assisting them in identifying their needs, feelings, causes, alternatives, and choices. In cases of conflict between two or more children, we help the children verbally solve the conflict by role modeling, helping with words, etc. When the teacher sees a conflict situation arising, she will try to identify causes, and then respond by stating an alternative for the child. For example, “you can put the block here”, instead of “don’t throw the ” IF the inappropriate behavior continues, the teacher tells the child the rule, and the consequences of the behavior if it continues.
For example, “throwing blocks may hurt someone, so we don’t throw blocks at school. If you throw blocks, you will need to make another ” We are careful to emphasize that it is the behavior that is unacceptable, not the child. When a child is being destructive to materials or harmful to another person, the child will be given a choice in order to redirect her/ his behavior to an acceptable alternative. A child may be asked to take a break from the group until s/he is ready to demonstrate appropriate Initials here: behavior. Rarely, in special instances when a child is likely to hurt him/herself or another child, the teacher will restrain the child by holding him/her.
If there is a chronic behavior issue that needs attention, we will let you know so that we are handling it in the same way and your child has continuity in discipline between our homes. These types of behaviors might include such things as biting, use of bad words, chronic hitting, etc. We will work cooperatively in developing strategies to meet the child’s needs. Our profession requires us, at PGGS, to keep all information about pupils and parents confidential. PGGS is not allowed to talk about other parents or children’s issues or progress. Some behaviors will not be accepted at school if continually reiterated: 1.
